CompTIA A+ Exams

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is a global IT trade association promoting industry standards, growing professional expertise, and providing IT skills education.

The A+ Qualification

Its A+ certification validates the latest skills needed by today’s computer support professionals. It is an international, vendor-neutral certification, recognized by major hardware and software vendors, distributors and resellers. CompTIA A+ certification confirms your ability to perform tasks such as installation, configuration, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and basic networking. The exams also cover topics such as security, safety and environmental issues, as well as communication and professionalism.

The A+ Exams

To gain a CompTIA A+ Certification you must pass two exams.  The first of these, A+ Essentials, is mandatory.  The second exam may be selected from three alternatives - IT Technician, Remote Support Technician or Depot Technician.

The course material that you are studying consists of two courses: A+ ONE and A+ TWO.  The combined material from these two courses teaches you what you need to know for the A+ Essentials (220-601) and the IT Technician (220-602) exams.

Note that you should complete both the A+ ONE and A+ TWO courses before you attempt either exam.

The CompTIA A+ exams are computer-based, and take the form of a series of multiple-choice questions.  Throughout the exam, you will have the opportunity to review previous questions and amend your answers if you wish.
  • The A+ Essentials exam will ask you 100 questions and you will be given 90 minutes to answer them.
  • The IT Technician exam will ask you 90 questions and you will be given 90 minutes to answer them.

The pass mark for A+ Essentials is 700; the pass mark for IT Technician is 675.  It is obvious that the better you do, the higher your score will be.  However, there is no simple relationship between your score and the number of questions you answer correctly.  This is because the questions are weighted according to difficulty.

The exam is designed to determine whether you have the level of skill and knowledge required for the A+ qualification. The important thing is to pass.

We have taken care to ensure that the information on this CD is up to date; however, you should be aware that  CompTIA may change the format or content of their exams without warning.

Non-assessed Questions

Sometimes, we get feedback from students who have taken exams and inform us that they were asked questions not covered in the course.  This can happen because CompTIA may set a number of questions, outside the scope of the syllabus, which are not used in determining your score.  These non-assessed questions are used to evaluate questions for inclusion in future exams.  You will NOT be told which questions are assessed and which are not. You should answer all questions in order to ensure you pass the exam, whether those questions are assessed or not.
